Required Reading

The following books have been instrumental in the development of the ideas that create the foundation for this project. If you aspire to create something similar, or are just curious about my inspiration, I HIGHLY recommend reading these:

  • Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging - Sebastian Junger
    • Combining history, psychology, and anthropology, TRIBE explores what we can learn from tribal societies about loyalty, belonging, and the eternal human quest for meaning. It explains the irony that-for many veterans as well as civilians-war feels better than peace, adversity can turn out to be a blessing, and disasters are sometimes remembered more fondly than weddings or tropical vacations. TRIBE explains why we are stronger when we come together, and how that can be achieved even in today's divided world.
  • The Way of Men - Jack Donovan
    • What is masculinity? Ask ten men and you'll get ten vague, conflicting answers. Unlike any book of its kind, The Way of Men offers a simple, straightforward answer-without getting bogged down in religion, morality, or politics. It's a guide for understanding who men have been and the challenges men face today. The Way of Men captures the silent, stifling rage of men everywhere who find themselves at odds with the over-regulated, over-civilized, politically correct modern world. If you've ever closed your eyes and wished for one day as a lion, this book is for you.
  • The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck - Mark Manson
    • For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.
  • Linchpin - Seth Godin
    • Have you ever found a shortcut that others missed? Seen a new way to resolve a conflict? Made a connection with someone others couldn't reach? Even once? Then you have what it takes to become indispensable, by overcoming the resistance that holds people back
  •  Tribes - Seth Godin
    • This is one of Godin's best works, and directly relates to this project's goals. It's more of a marketing book, but the ideas relating to the purpose and organization of modern tribes is excellent.
  • Extreme Ownership -  Jocko Willink and Leif Babin
    • Leadership from the perspective of two Navy SEALS. This is an excellent book and needs to be required reading for anyone interested in leadership.
  • How to Talk to Anyone - Leil Lowndes
    • Want to learn how to be a social ninja? This book is the best I've ever found on the topic of navigating interpersonal communication.
