Resources

This is the dumping ground where I post all the resources I've used and writing I've done that have culminated in this project, many of which have little to do with the project directly. If an individual or group wishes to replicate this experiment, understanding my influences, motivations, and evolution of ideas.

Writings directly related to the project

  • The Lab 2.0 - This was the last major writeup I did for the project at the onset of the COVID pandemic in late winter, 2020. It's the single most comprehensive plan I wrote, but is somewhat outdated. Still, this will give readers a rough idea of exactly what I'm trying to accomplish AND some of the rationale behind the project.
  • The Flawed Martial Arts Model - This was my plan for our BJJ/MMA gym before COIVD hit, and preceded the Lab 2.0 plan above. This goes into a little more details of the problem of owning and running a gym, including the history of where the typical business models originated.
  • Dealing With Coronavirus - At the time of posting, this probably isn't super-useful, but COVID was the event that moved me from trying to develop a better martial arts gym model to what would become the Lab 2.0 plan. I'm posting it because it might be useful to understand some of my motives for greatly expanding the project.

Blogs I've Written that Document the Evolution of these Ideas

  • EL Diablo Man Camp - This blog was originally written as a resource for the real-life men's group I was planning on starting, which was inspired by my "Man Camp" Facebook group. The material contains some original posts regarding owning and running our gym, and a few recent posts about dealing with the COVID pandemic. The masculinity posts are a toned down version of the original posts I wrote in the "San Diego Man Camp" blog linked below.
  • San Diego Man Camp - This is the significantly-less politically-correct version of the blog from above. Most of the blog deals with sex and gender in general and masculinity and femininity in particular. This blog is NOT for the feint-of-heart; it was written to be intentionally antagonistic and often features offensive language. Long story. Meet me in person and I'll give the full story.
  • The Sexpressionists - This was my original sex and gender blog that led to the evolution of ideas that led to the "San Diego Man Camp" blog above. Sex and gender was my original academic interest in college while training to be an experimental psychologist, and this blog was my "reintroduction" to the topic.
  • Squirrel Wipe - This is the ultrarunning blog that led to "Never Wipe Your Ass with a Squirrel"; a self-published book that was eventually sold to a publisher. The methods used to market the book are the same methods I'm using to build an audience for the eventual commercial endeavors for THIS project.
  • Roll Up Our Sleeves - This is an OLD teaching blog from the end of my teaching experiences in Michigan. While rather cynical, some of the basic ideas about schools and teaching heavily influenced this project's "school" element.
  • Barefoot Chronicles - This was my original barefoot running blog that eventually became Barefoot Running University. Because BRU is no longer functionally useful, this serves as a decent proxy to understanding how and why I got involved in this weird-ass hobby. This was my first major project that went against normal conventions.
  • Barefoot Running University - This is the crappy recreated version of the BRU blog that was recreated after I removed the original version (it was expensive.) The posts are all there, but the links within the site (to other posts) are likely broken.

Books That You Will Find Useful

Instead of re-linking every useful book, I'm linking to the resources pages on the various blogs above. Buying these books through these links gives us a small percentage of the purchase price, which helps us fund the project.
